# Interview surrounded by the concept: Wherever, Together – All Over The World #
At the end of the Greek Interview follows the English version
Πολίτης του κόσμου. Μια πετυχημένη καριέρα, μια πορεία που ξεχωρίζει. Πότε και πως αποφασίσατε να ζήσετε και να δουλέψετε στο εξωτερικό;
Ποιοι είναι οι σημαντικοί σταθμοί σε αυτή τη πορεία και πόσο συνέβαλλαν στην εξέλιξη σας;
Ποιες είναι οι δυσκολίες που συναντήσατε μέχρι σήμερα; Υπήρξαν κάποιοι άνθρωποι που σας βοήθησαν και πώς;
Πόσα χρόνια ζείτε στο εξωτερικό και σε ποιες χώρες; Πού σας άρεσε περισσότερο και γιατί, τόσο σαν τρόπος ζωής, όσο και εργασίας; Ποιες είναι οι διαφορές από Ελλάδα;
Τι συμβουλεύετε τους νέους ανθρώπους στην Ελλάδα, αλλά και τους Έλληνες που ζουν στο εξωτερικό; Κρατάτε επαφή και με ποιο τρόπο; Δουλεύετε, κάνετε παρέα με Έλληνες;
Πώς βλέπετε τις προοπτικές του Μέλλοντος από πλευράς τεχνολογίας, καινοτομίας, τεχνητής νοημοσύνης ή του κλάδου στον οποίο δραστηριοποιείστε;

The above article follows the interview in the English version
Citizen of the world. A successful career, a course that stands out. When and how did you decide to live and work abroad?
Although I grew up in Greece, from my youth I had always intended to live abroad. I remember my father telling me that Greece is a small market (due to the limitations language imposes – ironic, considering his great passion and expertise in the language), with many challenges and obstacles. If I ever wanted to unlock my potential and really test myself, it would have to be abroad. He encouraged me not only to learn languages, but to master them, as they would be essential tools throughout my life. Fortunately I have an American mother, which made this, and the path abroad, much easier.
In the fall after I graduated high school, I moved to London to study law at City University.
P.S. I never really did get a good hold on French…
What are the important milestones in this process and how much have they contributed to your overall development?
The first, and perhaps most important, was the group of friends who I had during my student years in London. For as close to twenty-four hours a day as possible I lived, ate, went out, stayed in, and generally did everything with them. Without them, the transition between Athens and London would have been much more difficult, and the nostalgia for home may have been too great to overcome. To this day, this group are still my closest friends.
The new friendships I made as a university student were also critical. It was with a highly international crowd (it did include some Greeks), a true blend of nationalities and backgrounds. This amazingly transformed the goal of each day from fighting how much I missed Greece, to exploring the unique and fantastic opportunities that only the British capital could offer.
My studies (undergraduate degree in Law and a masters in Banking & International Finance) shaped the way I thought and my career trajectory, or at least what I expected my career trajectory to be. The 2008 Financial Crisis changed everything. Opportunities evaporated. I recall one afternoon as I was heading for an interview with Barclays, I was thinking about their press release earlier in the day where they announced they were laying off 3,000 staff members. How in the world could they possibly hire me?
I returned to Greece where I worked in publishing, specifically Disney magazines and book publishing, for a few years. The reality of working in Greece was completely different from what I had grown accustomed to abroad. They were some of the most difficult and challenging years of my career, but also the years of which I am most proud. I grew, worked with some fantastic individuals, but also learned the harsh realities of a dysfunctional Greek market. I also met my future wife. She had spent the majority of her career abroad, and held similar views & values to my own. Together we decided to look outwards, and explore what the international world could offer not only us, but our children.
What difficulties have you encountered so far? Were there any people who helped you and how?
As my father likes to say “it’s only the first fifty years which are difficult”! I have faced a plethora of difficulties over the years, with each one yielding its own unique challenges. With the help of my wife, my parents, my siblings, my in-laws, my friends, and the father of my best friend, those difficulties were overcome. These people who have stood beside me, offering me guidance, advice, support, and also have created my most cherished memories. They have been the towering examples of what it means to be a man and a husband.
How many years have you lived abroad and in which countries? Which do you like best and why, both as a way of life and as a job? What are the differences from Greece?
I’ve lived in London for seven years. The differences with Athens are stark and numerous. London has trees, parks, sidewalks, mass transport, all of which are unfortunately too few and far between in Athens. You find less bureaucracy, and a tax system which is much more reasonable. In short, as a citizen, daily life is much easier and more enjoyable. Of course it’s not all positive (and I mean besides the food and the sunshine!). The contrasting approach Greece and the UK took towards the Coronavirus clearly illustrates this. Greece handled the situation with aplomb, taking a cautious and safe approach, while the British government wavered, unsure of its approach, its vision, and ultimately the best way forward.
Professionally there are great differences. The situation each market finds itself in is mirrored in the way its workforce operates. In Greece, you see a lot of hard work, initiative, people pushing themselves to be better, and working countless hours for little reward. In the UK, I would say substantially less hours are worked, but work is being done at a tremendous pace (it is really something that must be experienced to be believed). The total output from individuals in each country is similar, but when needed, the individual in the UK has the leeway to increase their output, while the Greek doesn’t. This isn’t to imply a difference in abilities, but merely that the Greek operates in a market where conditions constrain the ability to do so. I often feel that this is why when looking at Greeks abroad who are no longer weighed down by these shackles, we see high performers who are at the top of their fields.
What do you advise young people in Greece, but also Greeks living abroad? Do you keep in touch with Greece and how? In the country where you live, do you work, do you hang out with Greeks?
I would offer three simple pieces of advice:
- Learn a foreign language.
- Work at a multinational firm (ideally abroad). Study the company and the individuals who work there. Observe the way they approach the world and their work. Learn and adapt what you already know.
- Remember: Nobody owes you anything, and you have the right to nothing. These can only be earned through fulfilling your obligation to contribute to society and your country.
How do you see the prospects of the Future in terms of technology, innovation, artificial intelligence or the industry in which you operate?
Technology has drastically changed our behaviour over the last twenty-five years. It’s only logical that new industries have sprung up and grown into goliaths, while obsolete ones have dissipated into the ether. We should always remember there is room for innovation and ingenuity. For example e-shopping. You put your desired items into your basket and head to the checkout. Where’s the innovation there? Not really much has changed in the process that an ancient Greek would have followed. I can’t wait to see how, and by whom, these familiar processes will be reinvented.
Artificial intelligence, like all the major technological revelations (telecommunications, airplanes, the industrial revolution, computers, interet et. al.) has the potential to revolutionise the world as we know it. While the possibilities seem endless, only time will tell how this tool’s abilities will be leveraged and what innovations will be realised.
