World Environment Day 2025 landed with a blunt, one-line brief: #BeatPlasticPollution. Hosted by the Republic of Korea, the UN reminded us that plastic now contaminates the water we drink and even the air we breathe—yet it is one of the most solvable crises if we act at scale. What often escapes the headlines is that roughly one-fifth of all plastics produced flow directly into the building sector—insulation foams, site consumables, piping, finishes. Every kilogram we eliminate or loop back into the circular economy slashes not only marine waste but also the carbon embodied in our projects.
The stakes are high. Buildings already absorb about 40 % of Europe’s final energy and generate just over one-third of its energy-related CO₂. If we do not decouple construction from both fossil fuel energy and virgin plastic, we will simply move emissions from the smokestack to the shoreline. WorldGBC’s CEO Cristina Gamboa framed the moment perfectly: “Long-term strategy is winning over short-termism, and forward-thinking, visionary businesses and governments will reap the rewards sooner than we think.” That is more than a slogan—it is a warning to any nation that still prizes cheap disposability over durable value creation.
As President of SBC Greece, we push for immediate measures concerning the use of plastics. Measures that are economically rational and answer a moral imperative. Exponential change requires versatility. But the Parthenon has stood 2.500 years because it was built to endure, not to be discarded. Our generation must build in a versatile and strategic way with the same respect—for resources, for climate, for the people who will inherit both.
